Introduction & Theory

Key words & Definitions

In class I take notes of key words and their definitions.

  • Sound Object: Objects that make a sound.
  • Music Concrate: Music thats been recorded and reused.
  • Verisimilitude: Being believed or having the appearance of being true.
  • Eurorack: Instead of buying one big synth, eurorack is taken synthesised parts and making your own.
  • Mellotron: Keyboard that uses recorded sounds thats stored on tape.

Garth Mitchel Facts

I have picked up Garth likes us to take notes off key words and definitions however he also likes us to take notes of facts he shares knowledge of.

  • First sampler was called a Fairlight.

Ableton

In this unit we are being taught Ableton a DAW software. I am aware of this software however I have zero experience using this software until this lesson. I found using this software quite difficult and during lesson I felt really out of my depth with my technical ability of this software. I am hoping by the end of this unit I will be looking back with a smiling face knowing my technical ability has incensed.

Ableton Short Cuts

  • CMD J – Render
  • CMD 4- Switches Grid Off/On
  • TAB – Switches Session Arrangement
  • CMD + SHIFT – Time Stretch
  • CMD E – Split
  • CMD L – Loop

In conclusion lesson one we learned about how the origins of composing which was done with tape. Composition techniques and how sound was manipulated though physical changes for example splits which is another word for cut using tape.

The lesson then moved forward with an activity to field record some sounds which we then imported into the DAW Ableton and learned some digital composition techniques. How to time stretch using makers.
