Background

Cathy was a street performer to begin with.

Practice

Cathy works with multichannel recordings in which investigate topics or place and capture memory. Can you hear sonic traces of pasts memorys in present time?

Cathy works with 3 elements

  • Musical Sound (Usually electronically created)
  • Field Recordings
  • Spoken Word (Voice)

A recorded sound automatically becomes archival as memory material from default after recording.

Tonal Quality

Though tonal quality a listener has the ability of understanding truth. This was a statement I found upon reflection this statement was inspiring and I wanted to make a note of for future projects for myself.

Work Title

Extract – Am I Here? 21’32”

Cathy Lane

Explanation

“A playful exploration of how the concept of ‘Be Here Now’ translates to sound.” This was a statement I would like to quote from her presentation as this perfectly describes the piece of work. The use of the word playful was perfect because the sounds I was hearing were adventures indicating playful.

The concept of ‘be here now’ I understand because the listening experience was heard presently in its sense of place however with the journey being captured sounds from the last decade of different places there was no one setting, listening was a journey.

In conclusion I found field recordings exciting and inspiring to hear about as that’s an area I enjoy personally. The lecture was very intelligent from an academic standpoint which I found interesting as my course is very academic, listening to such a high academic was inspiring.
