Sound for Screen: The Art of Storytelling with Sound (Week 4)

Preparation Activity

Choose a film to start my practical work…

My Film Choice

A Quiet Place

A Quite Place (2018) Directed by John Krasinski [Feature Film]. United States:
Paramount Pictures.

Reasoning for my choice

After watching all the options this film clip stands out the most! I instantly started imagining the sonic world which excited me. I can imagine a sonic world that creates feelings of eeriness and tension. These emotions created by sound excite me as trilling films have always been my favourite.

Ways to Watch

Amazone Prime Video

I have chosen not to watch the film ‘A Quiet Place’ (A Quite Place, 2018) because, in my sound design course in college, my teacher said never to watch the clip you are sound designing. After all, it will influence your decision-making and it is good practice to start with only visuals and create the sound design from nothing.

Credits

Director John Krasinski

Producers Michael Bay & Andrew Form

Class Notes

Today’s class was inciteful to the technical terms used in film and how important these terms are to the art of building a sonic world in cinematography. We revised and expanded on terms and topics I learned in college.

Motif: A repetitive sound that gives clues or insight.

Continuity: How one sound transitions into another.

Point of View: A character or non-character and natural or unnatural perspective.

“It’s just as important what you consciously don’t put in the film as you consciously put in the film”.

Jessica (Lecturer)
