Amy Cutler (Week 4: 19th October)

Amy Cutler was suggested by Milo Taylor…so of course it was gonna be brilliant šŸ™‚

Amy Cutler is…

Sound artist, composer, live cinema designer and teacher at multiple universities.

Education

  • PhD Experimental Geography

Her Interests

…she often draws on fieldwork and environmental Foley.

Living 1 month on an uninhabited Finnish military island in the winter she created an album based on radar sounds.

Pathetic Fallacy

Medieval elegy to Anthropocene science…

Pathetic Fallacy‘ is “the attribution of human feelings and responses toĀ inanimateĀ things or animals, especially in art and literature.”

Anthropocene‘ is “the time during which humans have had a substantial impact on our planet”

Achievements

  • “In 2022 she won a Daphne Oram award, which recognises women and gender minority artists in sound experimentation.”
  • “Her most recent album,Ā SISTER TIMEĀ (Strategic Tape Reserve), was selected by Bandcamp for ā€˜The Best Experimental Music on Bandcamp: June 2023’, and mixes traditions of rage aria with the sounds of bones, wind, a horse’s reign, and the re-manipulation of her own childhood mixtapes.”

Portfolio

Adam Brown is a physician from Stanford University. Dr. Brown has a research project about black holes which gave the creative idea to Amy Culter to create this really inspirational cinematic and experimental piece.

Interview with Adam Brown about black holes. I gave this interview a watch as astrology interests me to the extent of the topic of energy from a spiritual perspective.

The PDF is about, whether can we take energy from a black hole?

Adam Brown explains if you have a spinning black hole you can bleed off rotational momentum from complicated vaporizers and extract energy but its kinetic energy is not stored black hole energy.

Adam Brown looked at the question can you extract energy from a stationary black hole? Steven Hawking 2 theories, The first is there’s no way to extract energy from a black hole however theory 2 implies if you ignore the facts of quantum mechanics it extracts very slowly…

What blew my mind was “When a black hole loses energy it gets hotter”, when energy is lost on earth energy gets weaker therefore definitely not hotter.

Anyway, I am very out of my depth but I enjoyed this little side tangent of researching black holes.

Cool Fact

There are instruments that are environmental sensing

Amy Culter uses many but she likes to use a ‘Strom Glass’. Strom Glass detects the weather made for navigation for pirates.

Conclusion

My favourite lecture yet. I actually met an MA (Masters) Sound Art student, Milly, She is returning to university after 8 years of absence. Back to the lecture with Amy Cutle, a very rich lecture was honoured to be in the room with an individual who has had so many achievements working with sound. Her interest aligned with mine regarding experimental music. Her work towards medieval elegy to Anthropocene science was also very interesting.
