Sound Studies and Aural Cultures with Dr J Milo

How do you approach reading?
Personally, I find difficulty in reading due to a lack of practice and dyslexia. Reading is the key to ‘awaking new knowledge’.
- Make a space designated for reading. This helps your mindset towards the activity of reading.
- Set goals of achievable time limits. For example for every 20 minutes have a 5-minute break.
- To increase focus use a pencil to help the eyes to track. This action sounds simple but this will have a significant impact on increasing your focus.
- Use sticky notes to bookmark key points as and after your reading. This is key to avoiding the time-consuming tasks of re-finding quotes to reference.
Part 1: Audio Segment
Method of Practice: Download Audio to see its Visual
Adobe Audition

Adobe Audition was the example for today’s lesson to explain compressional limiting. The instruction was to download audio you like the sound of, import this audio into a DAW of your choice and visually study the waveform. You can learn a lot from a waveform to inspire your own work.
The Study of Waveforms

This is an example of Compressional Limiting vs RAW waveform.
That isn’t to say one isn’t better than the other

Stylistic Choice
We as sound artists are artists and with art comes the beauty of stylistic choice to express our art. So RAW waveforms artistically capture moments in time like the background noise captures the audience’s expression and reaction creating a more live sense of place. Compressional limited waveforms capture a more professional vibe which stylistically may be a preferred option for your artist choice.
Sacrifice? Is sound quality important enough to sacrifice somebody’s comfortability which will come across in the recording. A studio setting can cause the mind to feel tense and uncomfortable whereas recording in their personal comfortable setting will capture and sacrifice acoustic quilty but increase nuance quality.
Part 2: Student Group Presentation
A Rainforest Acoustemolgy (Feld, 2003)
Presentation by Delcan and Avanah
Interesting Points
‘Anthrappogist viewpoint. To understand their culture they have to understand their experience.’ The question was raised ‘What was the experience of sound as a culture?
Avanah – She criticised the piece “how it was written from a Western perspective, not including enough local perspective interviews.”
Avanah (Class Mate)
Discussions like this make me love my university class more and more.
Declan explained; “just like our culture we use music to remember for example the alphabet song they use music to remember lyrics that are the names of places in the rainforest.”
Declan (Class Mate)
They see the rain forest as a body which poetically is shown in their language. Referring back to their experience of sound as a culture music is a huge part of every culture. I found it very interesting as in culture we use music to remember.

Sonic Dominance and the Reggae Sound System Sessions (Henriques 2003)
Presented by Zaron (me) and Mario
The experience of the sonic dominance sound systems is a force of nature. The bass is described as a sensory overload to the human bodily systems.
The term ‘Dance hall Raggae‘ comes from that fact Reggae was once banned from radio to avoid mass public influence therefor Reggae was only heard at outdoor dance halls.
New Terminology
Acoustemolgy
Portmanteau word (combining the sounds and meaning of two others) Combining the words acoustic and epistemology.
Epistemology
Knowledge of knowing? Through experience or education or sensing it?
Phenomenology
Philosophy of consciousness and experience.
Chiasm
Convays visual information to brain. Important to the visual pathway.
