Nausea Tone & Texture Sound Design Scene (Film Score)
Sound Design from a Character Perspective
I sound designing this scene from the perspective of the sick kid through nausea tones and textures. How will I achieve this? The use of synthesis and audio editing. Reverb and echos have created a sense of disillusion.

Captured from the Synthesiser: Korg Linilouge
I have added a low pass filter which resembles the nausea effect the low frequencies have more feeling. Very happy with this however I feel like it comes in too quick it needs to fade in.
Research
This idea was inspired by research into the sound design theory of the movie. This video details the two sound designers…
Ethan Van der Ryn
&
Erik Aadahl

…they gave really clever decision-making making thoughts that went into the sound design from the character’s perspective and how it shifts throughout to keep retention. That’s my reasoning for choosing a sound design for the character who’s feeling sick because its internal sound and feeling are portrayed that the monsters can’t hear. (if monsters are the antagonists the characters die).
Synthesis (Music Composition)
Serum
I have recently got serum which has been amazing in achieving such beautiful atmospheric texture to my music composition. I spent hours going through all the presets finding the ‘correct’ sound that creates that mood that fits the visuals.
I was successful and very pleased with what I composed for the music score.

Recording MIDI
Home
My Home MIDI Device I use to record Alesis q49.

Away from Home
When I have been working away from home I have been using Logic ‘create MIDI region’ and manually composing the film score. Over a few weeks I have composed music I am very happy with. I have composed music that makes you feel what the characters are feeling which has been the challenge but also the fun to be so creative.

Working at University
The University doesn’t have serum therefore I have had to bounce in place creating an audio file which worked so I could further develop my film score.
Ambience
Setting the Scene Outside

How Did I Make This?
I recorded the ambience at the home of birds using the H5 Zoom field recording microphone I took home from university.
I intentionally changed the sound of the birds and altered the volume with every scene change. I feel this gives a more professional feel.
I also used my technical skills to lower the tone of the birds so they don’t sound so peaceful they sound a bit more menacing. I am not looking for birds bees and rainbows I want to create a scary space sonically intensifying the listener’s experience.
Setting the Scene Inside

I wanted to use an Ambisonic recording of the ambience of a room so I booked out an h3 Vr Zoom microphone which unfortunately had the error SD card not working therefore I instead used an H5 zoom. After some technical editing skills, I managed to create an ambience that sounded menacing. I know it will sound different when mixing in a professional studio so I will wait to make final changes when I use Octophic Ring Monday.
