Stanley Kubrick
American Film Director

Initial Research Pre-Lesson
My Favourite Oline Resource: YouTube
YouTube is my favourite source to digest context, Joe Rogan is a comedian and combat sports commentator his gift is delivering energy through voice. He delivers relatableness through his Nuances, Paralinguistics, Prosody and Phonemes which I blogged their understanding here…
Information I Learned:
As discussed, Stanley Kubrick had extreme working environments that would be seen as forbidden work environments in today’s world. He would harass actors intentionally to create art out of emotion. An example is Shelley Duvall from The Shinning 1980.
“Stanley Kubrick was a madman in his spare time his hobby was complex mathematics.”
Tom Cruise is my favourite actor and Stanley Kubrick’s last film played the main role in Eyes Wide Shut 1999 Dramatic/Mystery. I must watch. The film is on DVD in the LCC library however I don’t own a DVD player and can’t book one of the orb (university resources).
Stan Kubrick was a perfectionist and only ‘Made a movie when it is ready’ whereas today films are dropping every 8 months. There were years and years between Stanly Kubrick’s films which shows the level of detail that went into his films. He included hidden meanings and messages in films leading to their discussions present day.
Information I Learned:
Include hidden meaning within his film Shinning 1998. This has led to conspiracy theories positively contributing that the Apollo moon landing was a hoax directed by himself, Stanley Kubrick.
“He was a legitimate genius”
Complex mathematics was a hobby to Stanley Kubrick
The theory is Stanley Kubrick was used to direct the Moon Landing.
Information I Learned:
“Usually Kubrick worked out of London”
London is so close to home which means the film dream industry is right here, exciting.
“Kubrick’s library is full of Archival material like old scripts and his notes in London.”
Which is held at my University London College of Communication.
Stanley Kubrick’s story is summarised in 30 minutes. A director who had the mind of a genius and was ahead of his time, he pioneered cinema and the film industry still studies him still to this day. He included himself in all areas of production to create masterpieces. Lighting was created to have a real feel as well as costumes and prop design is award-winning most notably his ability to convey emotion and storytelling through camera angles. I find the most fascinating hidden meaning within his films that is still being analysed today.
Part 1: Lecture: Sound & Immersion in the work of Stanley Kubrick
Which category does my audio paper fall under…
Fragmentation and Suggestion
Left to interpretation an audience makes their own opinion (Stanly Kubricks Work)
or
Continuity and Explication
Tell the audience how to feel, the opposite of leaving up to interpretation.
Category of Choice?
I personally find it inspiring to leave an audience to interpretation, ‘Fragmentation and Suggestion’ but because of the nature of my audio paper being informative I believe it will fall under ‘Continuity and Explication’.
Linguistics
The study of Langage.
Diachronic Linguistics
is the study of the history or evolution of language.
Synchronic Linguistics
is the study of language at a particular point in time.
Work of Stanly Kubrick
I really enjoyed today’s lesson of learning about Stanley Kubrick in such detail.

Full Metal Jacket
Based on a novel about Dehumanisation and Loss of humanity and dealing with the trauma of war.

Cinematography Analysis
We looked into detail how the sound mimics the image colour change for example green resembles realism and nature

and the colour blue resembles a nightmare state of mind which the sound reflects.

Stanly Kubrick Archives (Screenplays)
Our University holds the Archives of Stanly Kubrick’s work which is really cool and I have to have a look. We had a look at screenplays of Stanly Kubrick’s films which was inspiring to the methodology of working for cinema. Screenplays were also inspiring to bring my own film ideas to fruition.
