Speaking Clock
I am fortunate enough to have spent time over Christmas with my family. Spending time at my nan I asked the question “Before internet access, how could you know the time especially when the clock changes?” This question sparked nostalgic memories of the ‘speaking clock’ which was a phone number you could ring that would relay back the time of day.

Researching ‘The Speaking Clock’

Vinyl

I preferred not to learn things before my time and just keep up to date with new technology however, I have recently learned the extreme side-effects of new technology for example EMF which affects living organisms negatively therefore I have been developing my understanding of the world in a pre-technological era which was before my time. I now own a record player and I am having so much fun understanding the world of vinyl and building my own collection. The physical ideology of Vinyal creates a sense of security which I really like because the online streaming platforms that link to META and The Cloud can be accessed by anyone with a false sense of secrecy.

Mission Impossible uses cassette tapes and vinyl to deliver top-secret information because of its physical ideology. I am inspired by the sense of secrecy and would love to use this ideology for my own work. However, I don’t think it will be possible in this project, but the possibility is there for future projects. If I were to use vinyl for my exhibition because vinyl couldn’t be looped, I’d have to allow access to the public therefore any opportunists could steal my work.
Conclusion
A conversation sparked the inspiration to include the ‘speaking clock’ which was ‘before my time’ in my work. In the concept of time travel, I would like to take the listener into a specific era of time, and I believe using the speaking clock will do so in my work.
I have learned about vinyl which was before my time through experimentation however, there’s further research to be done. I would like to understand how to create vinyl for my future projects.
