Collaborating: Work-In Progress Report

On Tuesday, March 12th as a group, we meet again. We successfully discussed how to merge the sound design with Jon’s music composition. We discussed how production was going and the director’s decision-making process and reasoning for changes made to scenes. This gave insight into the narration which will be translated into sound as well as cinematography.

Third Meeting

Sound Design Production

The sound design production has efficiently been created along with the animation production. I have had difficulty with sound design production for example the dialogue.

The director’s decision is to have the voice of her domestic helper used in the animation. The narrative purpose adds to the personality of the project. Her domestic helper is based in Hong Kong and the best form of audio we have received is WhatsApp voice memos. If we were to able to record dialogue with high-quality microphones the production quality would sound professional however bad quality audio in production is hard to edit very time-consuming and sounds unprofessional.

I imported the dialogue into Adobe Podcast’s ‘enhance speech’ category. Adobe Podcast is an AI-powered transcription. A platform with high-quality audio editing. I usually disagree with using AI however on this occasion, as resources limited our options this was a tool that fixed the problem saving lots of time.

Sync

Working in an ongoing production process has meant I have had to resync the sounds as new footage gets added the timeline gets shifted. This is an easy process to fix however time-consuming.

Cleaning Logic Project Menu

As I stated to found making changes difficult because my project became extremely messy. Using track stacks and colour coding are great tools that create organisation. My project is now made easier to make edits because the edit menu is much clearer.

Conclusion

In conclusion, regular meetings have been a good way to stay disciplined in keeping sound design up to date with the animation production as well as keeping updated with the narrational elements of the story. I have managed to stay on top of the production of the sound design working in with the format creating the sound design as the animation is in production.

My time management has proved to be difficult with the heightened workload in year 2. My time is being taken up by two ongoing units, contemporary issues in sound art and collaborating. I understand my blog posts for the collaborating unit are not showcasing the process as much as they could. I have found it difficult to find the time to blog the process as well as keep on top of other units.
