Contemporary Issues in Sound Art – Essay Progression

Initial Idea

In the initial stage of this unit, I began brainstorming ideas. I was interested in exploring Tribal rituals and how sound works as a medium within an indigenous context. Heres a blog of my initial approach.

This idea was inspired by the work of Anne Goh, who explained in a lecture her work as a student exploring devices of sound that can communicate with the dead. I was very taken aback and inspired by her ability that she academicised a spiritual-based work.

Researching my Idea

Anyway exploring indigenous, tribal rituals, and how sound as a sensory perception and activistic in space, researching the topic I found difficult in numerous ways, enjoyment and financially. Firstly the scope was so large I became threatened by the workload, taking away the excitement. Financially having access to UAL’s library is great however the books I was looking for aren’t accessible, they are online, however, must be purchased.

Changing my Idea

In the back of my mind, I knew that choosing something to further my interest professionally would hugely be beneficial. Working in the film industry is the dream, being involved and credited for the production of sound for film. I currently been reading ‘The television genre book / edited by Glen Creeber.’.

Stunned by the front cover the amount of context this book explores is fascinating, from older television like Breaking Bad to recent television Stranger Things I found the structure inspiring to my work. This being my first time reading about film showed me an artsy approach to academicising in a scholarly way about film. I have also been reading the monthly issues of ‘Sound on Sound’ which has unveiled the wisdom to be learned about sound, an approach to reading well-edited sources. I visited BFI, British Film Institute where I purchased ‘Sight and Sound March 2024’.

Reading ‘Sight and Sound March 2024’ issue revealed the ‘needle drop’.

“needle-drop – a catchy term for licensing pre-existing music for a scene that complements or counters the happenings on screen”.

After engaging with friends in conversation about how I can approach my essay by combining sound and film. Exploring how sound is used as a device in film to create virility and trend in contemporary age excited me and I began my essay
