Element 2: Contempory Issues in Sound Art

Beginning Element 2: Creative Sound Piece

Brainstorm

Idea 1:

SOUNDSCAPE

Initial Idea,

Capture field recordings of London and edit these recordings creating diegetic and non-diegetic shifts that transition between consciousness and sub-consciousness. The music composition and the manipulation of the field recordings will inflict mood through sound. Demonstrating my new knowledge from Element 1 of how sound affects mood I will use narration to create a soundscape with the mood of London in its contemporary sonic environment.

Sequal?

This project could sequel my previous project unsleepable sleep which is produced in a nearly identical style. Capture field recordings of London and shape a sonic reality demonstrating the effect of noise pollution in the ears of the homeless.

Idea 2:

SONG

I enjoy producing music as a hobby, I specialise in songwriting in the style of hip-hop. I have been out of practice for a while as I have been focused on element 1 and would like to continue again soon. My inspiration is the artist Eminem. With his new album coming soon, the album concept has been revealed, I would like to have a go at the concept of ‘The Death of Slim Shady’. I would be interested to compare my attempt at 1 song to his album when it is released in the summer of 2o24.

Developing my Skillset,

I would be learning a variety of new skills essential to progress on my journey of producing music.

Some examples,

  • Ableton
  • Logic
  • Songwriting
  • Vocal Recording
  • Vocal Editing

Brainstorm Concussion

Both ideas would be of interest and therefore beneficial to developing my skillset in the professional world. Music is a hobby to me where whereas soundscapes interest me professionally developing my skill in manipulating sound. Beacuse sound art is an opportunity that allows me to explore sound experientially, I am choosing to create a soundscape for my element 2 creative sound piece. I prefer to keep creating music as a hobby of mine for my own use and intrest whereas composing soundscapes has exponentially furthered, my knowledge and skill set creatively experimenting with Sound from production to post-production.

Begin Sonic Field Work

Using the Telinga Parabolic Dish and Condenser Microphone Kit & H5 Kit, I and Alex began field recording in this particular spot elephant and castle under the overhead railway bridge as the sound was reverberated by the refections. Capturing the life of the city with three types of traffic, train, road and foot.

Favourite Sounds,

Road Traffic
Foot Traffic

The Panasonic dish captures a distinct sound emanating its sound source while the background seems muffled. The best way to describe it to somebody is it acts as the portrait mode of audio.

Conclusion

Branstorming has been a part of my practice at the beginning of a project to help me gather all my ideas. I then like to categorise and group, these ideas to further expand undeveloped fees, ideas into more complex forms, including theorisation and critical thinking. So far, I plan to capture London in its contemporary sonic environment, which is very chaotic from what I’m used to living in the countryside. As I’ve been exploring all forms of Sound art throughout my two years at university, I have become very aware of my ears and my sonic environment. Being lost in the noise of the city is sometimes too much and overwhelming, which I would like to contrast into my soundscape. Now that I have begun Production, and enjoying the sonic fieldwork of field recording I am excited to continue developing my skills by analysing, reviewing and experimenting creatively.
