New Idea: Eternal Connection
Themes
Love, Family, Blood, Grief and Spirit

Inspired By

Since I saw (Netflix, 2023) Sex Education where they used ‘art as healing’ for the character Amy for her trauma of sexual assault has inspired me to use my art as a healing mechanism for my own journey of the trauma of grief.
I was also inspired by an MA exhibition about normalising the conversation about death with our children.
My Story
I would like to know if I could explore the theme of grieve through sound in my exhibition.
The passing of Dad has been traumatic for me and my family. Art’s ability to express feelings like trauma is incredibly powerful. Music is an extremely powerful way to feel emotion however I want to see if Sound can be a way to explore trauma.
I believe the emotion of Love is the strongest you can feel however dealing with the loss of a loved one can result in fear of having the emotion of love for other loved ones. My little brother has struggled with the grieving process and this has had a traumatic effect on his life he has lost the ability to have a healthy relationship with his loved ones, especially his mother. The connection between a son and their mother is the strongest connection in the world.
Me and my mum have an incredibly strong connection, we are in tune with each other’s thoughts beyond anything we can comprehend. I also had an unbelievable event happen in my life that I believe was caused by my dad who has passed which means the impossible is possible in our reality!
Does our time on earth create connections between each other for eternity? I would love to explore these questions of our universe through sound.
Combining Ideas
I have had the thought to combine the two ideas.
- The first is using a window as space to sonically time travel you into the past, present and future.
- The second idea is, eternal connection, we are forever connected through true love.

About this Article
“In this article I’d like to take this a step further by using our sense of place to extend our self-awareness as well as discuss how to use sound to connect more deeply with the world around us – to use sound to re-connect in a disconnected world.”
Activity
Spend some time sitting in different places. Listen to the soundscape around you. Notice how much biophony there is (biophony is the sound of birds, insects, any living animal). Take your attention to the geophony (this is the sound of trees, wind, ocean, rain etc). If you are in a more urban setting perhaps there is anthrophony (sounds created by people such as traffic, machinery, human voices). Close your eyes and stretch your awareness as far as you can first and then open your eyes.
Conclusion
This article taught me we can connect to what’s alive this includes our environment through our ability to sense. Listening to our environment is a powerful way to feel connected and this will strengthen your spirituality.
I was inspired to include thought out “Biophony, Geophoney and Anthrophony” sounds that connect your spirituality to the environment.
Eternal Oblivion Theroy
I must explore all sides to the argument of ‘Eternal Connection’ and the ‘Eternal Oblivion Theory’ is a side to the argument to explore and understand.
My personal relationship with the ‘Oblivion Theory’ I choose not to believe in. It’s a dark and uncomforting belief of the afterlife and through my personal experience of life, I found that the connection of energy between our loved ones is too strong to turn into oblivion and not live on.

It is interesting to find different opinions from my own, one man’s comfort is another man’s discomfort. You should never compare yourself to others because we are all different however I belive we are all connected to each other.
The Sound of Death?

Article about ‘The Deah Rattel”
There’s a Physical Sound
…called ‘The Death Rattle‘
What is the Death Rattle
As someone approaches death, breathing patterns can change and secretions may collect in the throat. This can create a rattling sound known as the death rattle. It is a part of the dying process.
Whats the Sound of the Death Rattel?
The sound varies. It may be a crackling, wet noise that is amplified as the person breathes. In other cases, it may sound like a soft moaning with each breath, or a very loud gurgling or snoring.
What Happens After the Sound of the Death Rattel?
The death rattle signals that death is very near. On average, a person usually lives for around 25 hours after the death rattle and the dying process begins.
The physical sound of death is inspiring to recreate through field recording or manipulation of downloaded samples. With such limited access to resources because the university closed for winter break using samples might be the choice.

Book Review
The book’s goal is for the audience to explore beyond Western Culture…
Expands the knowledge of Music Composition explaining different music scales and their mathematics (equal scale, un-tempered scale etc…).
Exlopres the spirt of Flamenco.
The universal law of the creation of music. Indian Classical Music.
Somers finishes by reminding us that music touches our innermost being, and it can evoke in us new life, life that gives exaltation to the whole being, raising it toward that perfection in which lies the fulfilment of man’s life.
In conclusion, this book review gave a conversation to the topic of eternal and how can music relate. I find it fascinating the universal language of mathematics creates music and inspires me to include music that mathematically creates the sound of eternal.
