Unit Reflection Element 2: Contemporary Issues in Sound Art

Creative Sound Piece

‘Lost in the Noise of the City’

My Reflection

In conclusion, I have created a sound piece symbolising the nature of the urban sonic environment of London that has become so chaotic, where people have become tolerant of the noise pollution around them, where they become lost in the noise of the city, in which they can’t keep up with the chaos. Using field recordings and music composition, I transition between the two layering both simultaneously, demonstrating how the sound of London creates the feeling of anxiety, as we as humans aren’t able to perceive the amount of activity around us. London is an urban rainforest, a concrete jungle, the sonic environment is so chaotic we as humans, are taking up selfishly the entire frequency spectrum.

The process of element two, the creative sound project has developed all of my skills exponentially. I have increased my production skills. I have field recorded the majority of my sounds using microphones out of my comfort zone that I have now become familiar with. I have also increased my post-production skills, manipulating field recordings, being able to EQ, unwanted frequencies and enhance wanted frequencies and filtering sounds to create hallucinogenic and psychedelic tones and textures. My musical composition, in terms of texture and tone, has been successful in using sound to inflict mood on the listener.

Through my research, I have discovered the theorisation around sonic warfare an area in sound, which I am very interested in, which explores how sound affects us emotionally. I have discovered a variety of sound artists who specialise in soundscapes inspiring my practice and future ventures.
