This lesson was about understanding spacial sound. I have been very interested in this since college I been using binaural editing in Logic for projects in college so this lesson was very fun for me.
Theory
Reverberation
Teacher Facts:
Lower the bass frequency = the longer thee wave length.
Shorter Frequencies will be caught quicker (high end).
Key Words & Definitions
Period: One cycle in a wave
Sound is a physical property.
Decay…
…how much force sound being sent with.
Diffusion…
…movement between particles in the air.
Pre-delay…
…used more on vocals.
Transient…
…the first part of the sound.
Size…
…control the size of the room.
Reverberation is most captured in rooms of concrete and tiles.
Sprig Reverb…
…distorted characteristics
Plate Reverb…
…glossy and smooth
Convulsions Reverb…
…create impulse responses, fire a run into a space and capture the sound created in the room. Recording of the sound without the initial transient.
Stereo & Mono
Stereo is two channel output. Mono is one channel output.
Stereo was available late 60s and early 70s, psychedelic bands played around with stereo a lot.
Spacial Sound
Teacher Fact…
…when sound hits a surface energy is lost.
Microphone Placement
Microphone placement can be really important to record the correct sound you want.
Take into consideration:
Poloar Paatterns
What microphone covering
Distance
Pick up low or high frequency.
Plug In
We were taught about free plug in ‘Doppler effect‘. This plug in is great tool for spacial audio. As sound gets further away, the pitch is lowered. This plug in recreates this effect.
This plug in would be very useful in my project as it creates the hallucinogenic tones I desire to create.
