Collaborating: Contextualization in Sound Art

I have researched award-winning animation in stop motion to find inspiration in the world of sound design for this specific genre of animation. My research was successful as far as finding work examples as inspiration within the field.

Artist Research & Finding Work Examples

The sound design for this stop-motion award-winning stop motion I found inspiring towards my work. I noted down parts I find inspiring and why within my page of notes below.

Literature.

“Low-frequency infrasonic tones are also said to be especially effective in the arousal of fear or anxiety and “bad vibes.” In 2002, the brutal French film Irreversible, directed by Gaspar Noe, was released, loaded with ultra graphic sexual violence and a disorienting temporality to ensure maximum effect. In addition to the intense viscerality of the visuality of the film, its sonic dimension magnified the nauseous tone.”

Goodman, S. Sonic Warefare 2012 p. 66

While I have not used directly infrasonic tones I am inspired by the theorisation of ‘bad vibes’. My work explores a storyline of conflicting emotions which I represent through sound design using tonalities that create conflicting emotions of intensity within the world of animation.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, I have little research to contextualise my work in a sound arts context. I found it difficult to manage my time juggling contemporary issues in sound art and collaborating. In the future, I need to research more literature in a format of practice-based research. The book Sonic Warfare has helped me incorporate the theorisation of ‘bad vibes’ created by the tonality of sound which has the power of the ‘sonic affect’ of intense emotion. I found YouTube a resourceful sight for discovering work in the industry and the field of animation inspiring my work.
