Mixing for Film
My Final Mix?
- mono
- stereo
- 5.1 surround
- 8.1surround
I am planning an 8.1 surround sound mix using an octophonic ring setup.
Composition Room & Lecture and Peer Feedback

Jessica my Sound for Screen lecture and I had a ‘tutorial’ which is a discussion on how well I am getting on.
Lecture Feedback
“Neglect of Atmospheres”. I need to record and include some atmospheres which I completely agree with.
“Brilliantly shown my progression throughout this Unit”. Positive feedback is great and inspiring and made me feel proud of my work.
Peer Feedback
Maria another Sound Art student in the year above watched my work and it’s always weird when showing your work to others your hearing becomes more critical, this is a great way to influance new ideas.
Dubbing 8.1

Octophonic Ring
On 13th November I booked out this room to begin the final dub.
The session acted as a practice for completing the final dub. I learned the technical ability to set up a session for 8.1 mix using Logic. Unfortunately Logic isn’t the best capable DAW, for surround sound in fact Pro Tools is. My next booking for the room is next Monday and I will have a prepared session ready for a dub, possibly using Pro Tools for a more efficient and better outcome.

Negatives
Firstly, Logic was a very glitchy software when mixing in 8.1 which cost me studio time. Preparing a session better and in protocols would be two solutions to this problem I learned from this experience.
Also, some sounds were clipped which wasn’t happening in the composition room. This needs fixing before the hand-in as clipping is very unprofessional.
Positives
Today’s sessions weren’t the most productive in the sense of the outcome however the time used was a great learning experience with valuable insight into working with specialised sound.
